The Erbil Central Bank project was initiated through a competitive selection, from which my design was chosen. The process began with in-depth research into Erbil's historical and architectural identity, focusing on the iconic Erbil Citadel, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited sites. Drawing on the citadel's circular form and fortified character, I incorporated a circular main building layout and a high perimeter wall to meet the security needs of a modern financial institution.
During the design development, careful attention was paid to blending historical aesthetics with modern functional requirements. I applied the gradual stepped profiles of the citadel's layered buildings in the main structure and wall heights, ensuring that the massing reflected the historic layering while maintaining a modern functionality.
From the outset, the design was deeply rooted in the history and culture of Erbil. I drew inspiration from the iconic Erbil Citadel, focusing on its strong, protective architecture, its stonework and the distinctive arches that define its character.
As the building was to serve as a central bank, its security was a top priority. I incorporated traditional defense elements, such as a high surrounding wall and solid building forms, with direct allusions to how ancient citadels were built to protect what was inside.
Durability and maintenance: By using thick brick walls (36 cm wide) and marble finish, the building is built to last a long time and handle the local climate with minimal maintenance. This approach helps to make the building more sustainable over its lifetime.
